CDI 2015 Annual Report
Project Brief: To produce the 2015 – 2016 Annual Report for Child Development Institute (CDI) both in a printed and digital format. CDI is an accredited children’s mental health agency in downtown Toronto. The organization offers various programs for children, youth and their families in Early Intervention Services, Family Violence Services, and Healthy Child Development. Their annual report highlights the progress made over the year, and communicates the diversity of programs, expertise of the faculty and breadth of resources available across Canada, more specifically the GTA.
My Role: This annual report was created by myself along with the team at Fusion Design Group. My role included, creative direction and development/execution of the report. I also worked with a freelance illustrator to create the artwork throughout.
Concept: The theme for this years annual report was “Impact and Outcomes.” The client wanted to show that the small contributions made by donors have a huge impact on the individuals and families that use the programs. We brought this concept together visually using a few different elements, including, creating custom illustrations to go along with each story. We focused on a different program offered at CDI in each article. At the end of the report, we created a puzzle with a map-like illustration that included landmarks for all of the programs mentioned throughout the report. Each of the individual pieces from the puzzle was also placed on the spread with the program that it related to. Highlighting the idea that each program is just one small piece of a much bigger objective.
Process: Several conceptual directions were presented to the client and the chosen concept was further developed. We went through client-provided articles and designed specific spreads for each one, art directing custom illustrations that complimented each story. Various rounds of revisions were completed and then the final piece was approved. We also managed the printing of the piece through to delivery, including reviewing proofs and on-site press checks.
Results: The client received outstanding feedback from donors and faculty. Our firm was awarded the project again this year.
